Can anyone recommend any of those compact (couple of weeks/months) film schools?

Panico Foundation in Film, London.

'twas 10 years ago I did the same course, and look at me now!

Man, those Panico courses look damn expensive!! A few hundred quid for an hour workshop?! I'm basically looking around for something to save me the time and money demanded from full-length film school...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I did the foundation course, at the time it was 5 consecutive evenings and a week-end shoot for about ?500

Now it looks to be over six weekends (Sat OR Sun, not both!) and is ?800.

You then get to join their network nights where they drink beer and post paid gigs.

If you think that's expensive, try buying your way into the London International .....

Another route is to just join your local BECTU, if they'll have you.

edit: also, before I enrolled with panico I went to one of their opening evenings, which they still do:

Ahhh, now that I read it properly, that sounds pretty good
.
Did you learn a lot from that? I pretty much just want to beef my knowledge up to industry standard and also get a wee it of experience shooting on film before I go looking for a job!

I learned a fair bit, and they do let you keep the course materials (at least in my day). A lot of it was confirming what I thought I already knew, which was still valuable since it was coming from industry professionals.

Subsequently doing the network evenings I ended up working for Guy Ritchie on music videos and his short "The Hard Case" and did some work for Planet24. Worked on numerous short films as a sound recordist. It's a tough life though .... good job I also know how to fix folks' computers ;-)
